Spooky Bread

Scrolling through Pinterest I found this super cute picture of black bread with little skull mushrooms, it looked spooky and delicious. When I clicked on the post to get more information it went directly to a picture…. whoever saved it, saved it as a picture only. I did find the actual post and followed it to the recipe. I’m not sure, it might have been the food coloring, but the bread did not come out well. I didn’t have black food coloring, so I just mixed all the colors till I got a black. I remade it using a basic focaccia bread recipe that I’ve used before. However, I bought black food coloring, and I also added the coloring to the yeast water before mixing.

There are a few things that you have to remember about bread-making: it’s a labor of love. It’s an activity that can bond people together, it can bring comfort, and It’s something that will leave lasting impressions. This focaccia is made with a variety of spooky toppings, including mushroom skulls, onions, roach tomatoes, and garlic ghosts. For either a fun spooky treat for the kids or a fun party dish, this spooky bread is the perfect way to show your dark side this Halloween.

*For the mushrooms: Slice them in half, then use a straw to poke out two holes in the mushroom cap to make the eyes. Then use a knife to make little slices in the stem to make the teeth. You can use the knife to also make little nose holes just below the eyes on the cap. I skipped the nose step because my 15-month-old was done watching her show and actually was demanding my love…. Who am I to deny that rarity?

*For the garlic ghosts slice the garlic length wise and use a to poke two eyes and a mouth.

*For the roach tomatoes: Slice the tomatoes in half and then use the knife to slice out little legs.

This is the basic focaccia bread recipe that I use

Ingredients:
1 teaspoon white sugar
1 (.25 ounce) package active dry yeast
⅓ cup warm water (110 degrees F/45 degrees C)
2 cups all-purpose flour
2 tablespoons olive oil
¼ teaspoon salt

Directions:
In a small bowl, dissolve sugar and yeast in warm water. Let stand till foamy, about 10 minutes.
In a large bowl, combine the yeast mixture with flour; stir well to combine. Stir in additional water, 1 tablespoon at a time, until all of the flour is absorbed. When the dough has pulled together, turn it out onto a lightly floured surface and knead for about 1 minute.
Lightly oil a large bowl, place the dough in the bowl and turn to coat with oil. Cover with a damp cloth and let rise in a warm place until doubled in volume, about 30 minutes.
Preheat oven to 475 degrees F (245 degrees C).
Deflate the dough and turn it out onto a lightly floured surface; knead briefly. Pat or roll the dough into a sheet and place on a lightly greased baking sheet. Brush the dough with oil and sprinkle with salt.
Bake in a preheated oven for 10 to 20 minutes, depending on desired doneness. If you like it soft and fluffy, then start with 10 minutes.
